Why Russia has no competition in the oil and gas?
The industry is dominated by state-run Gazprom. Is money because it has so much to run a diesel company or that many small businesses would be feasible? But What are the risks of such a monopoly, both Russia and the countries Europeans who depend on Russian oil and gas?
gas transport (pipelines) is a natural monopoly in the sense that it would be inefficient to have more than one company. Since access to transport is required for the production or export of gas, Gazprom essentially controls the production and exports, and chose not to let other companies in Not surprisingly, Gazprom has been created by re-labeling of the gas department of the Soviet Union. The oil industry is more decentralized, for some reason. The transportation is monopolized by Transneft, but private producers (TNK, Lukoil, etc.)
